My POV
I was not expecting such a big story from such a small book. The gorgeous cover deceived me a little because  this 198 page adrenaline pack story was about aliens in a small Texas town near Houston (my home town). I’ve always been terrified of aliens after seeing Fire in the Sky so this book was on the scary side for me but you will not find the book in the Horror section in the bookstore. I would say its more of a YA Thriller with a pocket full of romance.

The five main characters, Blair, Andrew, Everett, David and  Natalie go through some major changes during their summer before leaving to college. This book is written in Blair’s POV and she is one year younger then her brother and friends and while they are all graduating she is moving up to senior status as fall comes around. The summer starts off just the same an any other in their usual meeting spot at the drive in when you get the suspicious feeling that not all is what it seems in this small community. Buildings start to look suspicious, people are acting a little differently, animal are being skittish, crop circles are mysteriously appearing, and the “haunted wood” holds many surprises for this Texas town.

Cicada

Today I’d like to welcome a fun group a young friends from Cicada, who are here to answer my questions, get ready for some interesting answers!

SNR: What is your ideal summer vacation? With friends or family?

David interrupts the rest of the group by saying, “I’ll answer this one.”  Then he puts his arm around Natalie and says, “Best vacation would be me and Natalie on a tropical island.”
“I’d like to go on a trip to the Congo for bug collecting,” Everett said while pushing his glasses up.  “With friends would be the most fun…if I could get them to come along.  What about you, Blair?  Would you go?”
“Try and stop me, Bug Boy!” Blair giggled and elbowed Everett in the ribs.
“My perfect vacation?  All of my friends, the ones sitting here with me today, and my family on a camping trip in the mountains.  I think that would be the perfect vacation,” Andrew answered, smiling at his friends.

“What David said,” Natalie answered, smiling and gently laying her head on David’s shoulder.

Want to get to know the main character, Blair, a little better? Here’s an enlightening interview with her and Trini!

  1. Sand Dollar or Shark Tooth:  “I think I’d prefer a sand dollar,” Blair answered, her voice low and thoughtful.
  2. Deep Space or Ocean Deep:  “Definitely deep space.  Although, I’m not really sure why…” she twisted a tendril of her light brown hair around her finger and bit her lip.
  3. Bar-B-Que or Fast Food:  “Bar-B-Que!  At my grandparents’ ranch!  There’s nothing better in the world than Grandpa’s brisket and Grandma’s banana pudding!” she giggled.  “You’ll have to come to the next one.  I’ll send you an email when we plan one,” Blair scribbled the interviewer’s email onto the palm of her left hand.
  4. Cicadas or Mosquitoes: “Cicadas are the little lullaby bugs that sing me to sleep in the evenings,” Blair smiled.  “You know, there’s a parallel in the Cicada’s life cycle that can also symbolize change.  Or so my friend, Everett, tells me. Well, maybe he’s a little more than a friend.”
  5. Cupcakes or Brownies:  “My mom makes the best cupcakes in the world at her bakery.  Have you been there?” Blair asked the interviewer.  “It’s called ‘Sprinkles’ and it’s the best place in Willis for bakery items.”
  6. The Drive-In or Theater: “Definitely the drive-in with my friends!  We pile into the back of my brother’s truck and hang out until the place closes sometimes,” she said while checking her text messages on her cell phone.

First off, let me just say how much I appreciate Tiffany for having me over to her lovely blog for a cup of hot tea and a chat!

Interview Questions:

How did you come up with the idea for cicada?

That’s a really good question!  There were actually a lot of little things that came together to form the idea for Cicada.  For instance, there really is a suspicious-looking building across from the drive-in.  And there really is a small forest that looks extremely spooky and haunted…especially at night!  And…there really is an old storage facility that has an odd number of bunnies living withing the confines of the chain-link surrounding the property. But it goes farther back than that!

Cicada Holiday Companion Story
By Belle Whittington
Christmas in our small, inconsequential, southeast Texas town is usually a cold and rainy time of the year.  In retrospect, the snow and sleet that covered everything, including the haunted forest, in a blanket of white must have been a harbinger that everything was about to change.  However, at the time we thought it was a good omen.  At the time we thought that all the sadness of losing our father and brother would finally disappear and we could recall the memories of Christmases past without shedding tears or hiding the pain under a pillow at night when all the rest of the world had fallen asleep, dreaming of sugar-plums and Santa Clause.
And so we filled Sprinkles with the spicy, sweet aromas of Christmas, drawing in customers with candy canes painted on the front windows and strings of twinkling lights swirling around the shrubs in front of Mom’s bakery.  Giant gingerbread men dangled from the branches of the Norfolk pine tree that Andrew had bought at the Willis Boy Scout Christmas tree lot, and strands of popcorn and gumdrops adorned the tree, forming giant Ws from the blinking star on the top to the piles of the deceptively-wrapped empty boxes stacked beneath the decorated boughs.

Congrats to Mandy!  She won an e-copy of Cicada on Beckie’s lovely blog!

Cicada was a book I didn’t know much about from the synopsis. But the dark secret waiting it the woods wasn’t quiet what I was expecting either. But a little mystery never hurt anyone. Cicada had me drowning in suspense and falling in love with its characters.

Belle writes her scenes with just enough suspense, mystery, and just the right amount of romance to balance it all out. But I do wish I could have had a hint or two in the beginning with Blair and Everett. Everett is Blair’s “bug boy”,  together there child like antics where amusing. I fell for the nerdy, sweet, and caring Everett. He had traits that weren’t typical for a character like him. Everyone expects him to be quiet, and timid. But not Everett hes loud, brave, and not afraid to get his opinion across. Looks can be very misleading.

Summary: (from goodreads) Summertime for Blair Reynolds and her friends had always been carefree and fun…until the summer they happened upon something that was not human. As soon as I started to read this book, it had its hooks in me. When you read the blurb for this book it doesn’t give you much information. You just know Blair and her friends are going to have something big happen in their lives and there will be a big secret to keep.

At first I was creeped out with the way things started, but I couldn’t but help continue to read, and as the book delved deeper into the secret, I just got progressively more into the book. I finished this in one day within maybe a 6 hour time span. It was just one of those books that keeps you totally engrossed in the story line, and you just NEED to continue to read what is on the next page. There was a point where you say to yourself, “Ah, I should take a break and finish reading this later.” Nope.

Review
My first thoughts we how much I loved the preface. How can you put down a book when it tells you if you cant keep secrets then don’t read, I had to carry on reading to see what it was about.

Now comes the hard part, writing my review without spoiling it for anyone who hasn’t read it yet.
